Of the 197 independent countries of the world, not all nations have their own currencies. Most countries in the European Union have adopted the Euro as their official currency starting in the year 1999. Similar monetary unions exist in West and Central Africa, the Pacific Region, in the Caribbean and in Central America.

Euro used as the common currency brought the elimination of exchange rate volatility, easy access to a large and monetarily unified European market and price transparency with it.
